Speaking after the announcement Cllr. Devlin stated that “A Dublin Transport Authority will be established by legislation coordinating Dublin's Transport Strategy. It is all part of this Governments commitment to improving public transport services under its Transport Investment Programme -Transport 21"

The Government
anticipates a requirement of 200 new buses for the Greater Dublin area over
the next two years while a total of €530 million is being earmarked for the Dublin area under the Transport 21 initiative.

"This announcement comes only four months after Dublin Bus allocated several new buses to the Dún Laoghaire area which included new buses on the 46A, 7, 111, 59, and number 8 bus routes. It also underlines this Governments commitment to our public transport services on project such as the extension of the DART platforms, the purchasing of new DART carriages, the supply of brand new buses on local routes and the proposal to extend the LUAS out to Cherrywood. These are real results which have been on time and on budget" Cllr. Devlin pointed out.

"Fine Gael and Labour criticised this plan when it was unveiled a year ago but look at what it has achieved already not to mention outside of Dublin. Only last month work began on the re-opening of the Western Rail Corridor which will see many large towns in the West re-connected by train once again so it's obviously full steam ahead for this plan" he insisted.

Now with the new investment of 200 buses which will be provided by firstly giving Dublin Bus €30 Million to acquire 100 new vehicles for delivery in 2005 – 2007. Secondly, the new Dublin Transport Authority (D.T.A.) will have responsibility to procure an additional 100 buses from the private sector to provide services on new routes. Councillor Devlin said that he hopes the D.T.A "will investigate the implementation of an integrated ticketing system for all of Dublin which will in turn encourage more members of the public to use public transport as an alternative to driving their cars".
